Virunga Congo’s Famous National Park closed

Virunga Congo’s Famous National park closed down. Africa’s oldest National park and a home to the world’s famous population of Gorillas closed down until further notice. The violence and instability in the country have affected the performance of the park. According to a statement by Emmanuel de Merode, the Belgian aristocrat who is director of the park; a security re-evaluation following some deadly attacks is going on thus the closure.

The park which borders Rwanda to the south and Uganda to the east; faces various threats such as militias and wildlife poachers. Militias and smugglers over the past 10 months have slain 12 park rangers.

In a  recent ambush, a ranger was killed, a driver wounded and two British visitors abducted which; was blamed to be the local Mai Mai militia. The visitors were released two days later.
